The Group's strategy consists of publishing and distributing products for all mass-market interactive systems (game consoles, PCs). The Atari Group's product line is divided among three segments: action games, family entertainment and car racing. Games are developed based on themes or characters owned by or licensed to the Group . In most instances, Atari is the owner of the product software. Intellectual properties that become highly popular are considered "franchises" with a built-in value that can be used for various purposes.
The Group's development and publishing operations have enabled it to build a strong base made up of popular franchises such as Test Drive, Alone in the Dark, V- Rally, Backyard.
The Group also develops and publishes software under key theme licenses, such as Dragon Ball Z, Arthur & the Minimoys, Matrix, Dungeons & Dragons.
The Group also holds licenses on family-themed entertainment, including Titeuf, Asterix, Dora, Totally Spies, Arthur & the Minimoys.
In addition, Atari holds an exclusive worldwide license on 10 Hasbro intellectual properties [10-year license on Dungeons & Dragons in all interactive formats, 7-year license on nine major Hasbro properties, covering wireless, Internet (online games) and interactive television formats for Monopoly, Scrabble, Risk, Game Of Life, Clue, Yatzhee, Battleship, Boggle, Simon.]
These licenses provide unquestionable benefits in terms of both product development and marketing:
• during the development stage of a product, a license gives access to abundant preexisting content without the need for prior studies;
• in terms of marketing, the proven success of a previously created universe or character gives games instant public recognition.
